Torsten Nielsen holds a master degree in choir conducting and singing from the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen.
He has been a member of the Danish National Vocal Ensemble for more than 20 years, as well as appearing as a guest singer with Paul Hillier’s Ars Nova Copenhagen and Theatre of Voices.
He is often heard as a soloist in works such as Fauré’s Requiem, Brahms Requiem, Handel’s Messiah, J. S. Bach’s Cantatas and Passions and Grieg’s Four Psalms for baritone solo and choir.
Recently he sang the very high bas part in J. S. Bach’s Cantata 194 “Höchsterwünschtes Freudenfest “ with Aarhus Bach Society, proving his wide baritone-range to be confused with a tenors voice in the later positive concert reviews. Torsten also received several positive critics and reviews as the evangelist in Musica Ficta’s recording of Lassus’ St. Matthews’ Passion.
Furthermore, Torsten is a passionate lied performer, his favorite repertoire being the song cycles of Mahler, Schubert, Schumann and Brahms. This spring Torsten performed lieder by the danish composer C.E.F. Weyse and Schubert, accompanied by Christian Westergaard on fortepiano in Copenhagen.
